Cynthia Rowley: Where Sporty Chic Meets Red-Carpet Glamour for Hollywood's Elite

Cynthia Rowley has carved a unique niche in the fashion world, seamlessly balancing the glamour of red-carpet couture with the functionality of sporty chic. Known both for her stunning wedding gowns and her stylish wetsuits, Rowley embodies the spirit of versatility that resonates with many celebrities. At the recent Whitney Art Party, which she co-hosted for the second year in a row, Rowley shared insights into her career and aesthetic, which she describes as a blend of “sporty meets pretty.” Her journey began in a small Midwest town where sewing was simply a cherished hobby. Little did she know that her passion for creating would eventually lead her to the heights of the fashion industry, dressing some of Hollywood's biggest stars.

Rowley’s rise in the fashion world is a tale of serendipity. While pursuing her passion for painting at the Art Institute of Chicago, a nudge from her roommate urged her to explore clothing design instead. This spontaneous decision saw her driving a U-Haul to New York City, a move that would define her career trajectory. Nearly four decades later, her namesake label boasts a celebrity clientele that includes Julia Roberts, Katy Perry, and Janelle Monáe, among others. Rowley values the memories her designs evoke for wearers, stating, “Your closet is like a scrapbook.” Each piece isn't just clothing; it’s a vessel for cherished moments and experiences.

One standout moment in Rowley’s career came when Julia Roberts unexpectedly donned one of her dresses. Rowley recounted her surprise when news broke that Roberts had chosen her design, saying, “I had no idea. She went into my store, she bought the dress.” Roberts not only wore the dress but also featured it as one of her all-time favorites in a Vogue spread, making it a meaningful accolade for Rowley. The joy of dressing someone she admires deeply, coupled with the serendipity of her discovery, encapsulates Rowley's sentiment toward celebrity clientele. She highlights her admiration for Roberts’s talent and humor, emphasizing how rewarding it is to dress people she truly respects.

Rowley has also created lasting connections with other stars, such as Hilary Duff and Katy Perry. The designer recounted a delightful experience her daughter had meeting Duff, recalling, “She was so nice to her and so lovely.” As for Katy Perry, their creative collaboration resulted in a memorable cupcake-themed dress for an album cover, a fitting project that showcases both Rowley’s creativity and Perry's vibrant persona. Their bond extends beyond the clothing, as Rowley feels a connection to the artists she dresses—seeing them not just as clients but as friends.

Among Rowley's noteworthy projects is her iconic wetsuit line, a venture that reflects her whimsical approach to fashion. She has dressed Lindsay Lohan for her movie roles and recalls how Lohan once sought a wetsuit for a scene in the anticipated “Freaky Friday” sequel. “I love to see people in the wetsuits because they look like superheroes,” Rowley says, showcasing her deep-seated appreciation for how clothing can empower and transform. In her eyes, Lohan perfectly embodies that superhero spirit, reinforcing Rowley's belief that fun and functionality can coexist in fashion.

Rowley’s experience discredits the notion that dressing celebrities is an arduous task filled with endless fittings and alterations. Contrary to this expectation, she shares stories of celebrities like Sarah Jessica Parker and Taylor Swift who often simply visit her store and purchase pieces directly off the rack. “It’s a happy surprise!” Rowley enthuses, highlighting the authentic and spontaneous nature of these encounters. Her history with Parker, in particular, is rich with anecdotes about shared experiences as fellow West Village residents, illustrating how personal connections enhance professional relationships in the fashion world.

In addition to dressing Hollywood luminaries, Rowley finds joy in working with comedic stars such as Nikki Glaser and Maya Rudolph. Her experiences with these funny ladies are filled with laughter and genuine enjoyment, reflecting her belief that personality should shine through in what one wears. Rowley’s playful designs resonate with her clients, but it’s their personalities that truly bring the clothes to life—this interplay between identity and expression is central to her design philosophy.

Rowley’s story is one of embracing creativity, celebrating authenticity, and forming bonds with the celebrities who inspire not only her collections but also her journey. Her designs are not merely pieces of fabric; they represent memories, friendships, and a sense of empowerment for the women who wear them. As she continues to blend sporty aesthetics with elegant style, Cynthia Rowley remains a force in the fashion industry, proving that whether on land or sea, she’s always ready to dress the extraordinary lives of her celebrity clientele.
