From NFL Gridirons to Political Rally Stages: The Shifting Alliances of Black Celebrities with Trump

The world of celebrities often intersects with politics, and recently, a notable group of Black public figures has emerged as supporters of former President Donald Trump. From former NFL star Todd Gurley to rapper Nicki Minaj, this alignment has sparked conversation and concern among fans and activists alike. As these celebrities step into the political arena, their choices carry weight and provoke reactions, transforming their public image in the eyes of many.

Recently, Todd Gurley, a former running back for the Los Angeles Rams and an alumnus of the University of Georgia, made headlines when he boarded Air Force One to visit Georgia with Trump. The former athlete attended a Republican rally in Dalton, where he expressed gratitude for Trump's invitation and declared, “Go Dawgs!” Although Gurley refrained from explicitly endorsing Trump, his presence at the rally raised eyebrows. Many fans were quick to voice their disappointment on social media, reflecting a growing unease about the support that Black celebrities are showing for a figure who has often been a polarizing force in American politics. Gurley’s experience highlights a broader trend of Black public figures navigating their relationships with Trump, leading to a complex web of endorsements and political statements.

Nicki Minaj has also taken a surprising turn by publicly supporting Trump. Initially, she defended him against online critics in 2025, later appearing at the Trump Accounts Summit in January 2026, where she pledged substantial financial support for children's investment accounts. Minaj described herself as Trump's “number one fan,” a label that has drawn mixed reactions from her fanbase. Since then, she has become increasingly involved with the Republican Party, encouraging young voters to cast their ballots for the GOP. This evolution in Minaj's political stance underscores the idea that celebrities can wield substantial influence on public opinion, particularly within their fan communities.

Another notable figure is Snoop Dogg, who has had a complicated relationship with Trump. After harshly criticizing him for years, including a threat to roast any Black artist who performed at Trump’s first inauguration, Snoop surprised fans by accepting an invitation to perform at a celebratory event ahead of Trump’s second inauguration. While Snoop insists that his performance does not equate to an endorsement, many fans feel betrayed given his previous vocal opposition to the former president. The contradictions in his stance highlight how deeply intertwined celebrity culture is with political expression, often complicating the narratives fans expect from their idols.

Nick Cannon has also stirred controversy with his support for Trump. During an episode of his web series in 2026, he openly praised the former president and made historically contentious claims regarding political party alignments. This willingness to back Trump has raised eyebrows, especially considering Cannon’s previous statements against him. Similarly, Waka Flocka Flame, who once issued statements against Trump, has transitioned to openly supporting him, declaring his alignment with Trump’s campaign and public persona. Despite revealing that he has never voted, his vocal support illustrates a larger trend among some celebrities: an exploration of political identity that may not always align with traditional electoral engagement.

Among those with long-standing friendships with Trump is boxing legend Mike Tyson. Tyson has ties to Trump that date back to the 1980s when Trump hosted his fights. Tyson’s endorsement of Trump’s political ambitions began in 2015 and has continued, with recent appearances at campaign rallies. Floyd Mayweather Jr. also shares a historical relationship with Trump, attending high-profile events and expressing unwavering support. Their longstanding friendships with Trump add a layer of complexity, blending personal camaraderie with political endorsement.

Amber Rose’s pivot toward supporting Trump is one of the more unexpected transformations in recent months. The model, who has been an outspoken advocate for women's rights, previously criticized Trump before declaring her support for him in 2024. Rose's shift was marked by her presence at the Republican National Convention, where she claimed to have found her political "people." This significant change raises questions about the motives behind her pivot, as well as how it resonates within the broader discourse surrounding celebrity influence in politics.

Kanye West’s relationship with Trump has also been a rollercoaster. Known for his vocal support and even running for president himself, West's declaration of loyalty during the 2024 election, stating “It’s Trump all day,” showcases the complexity of celebrity political affiliations. His history with Trump is marked by passionate endorsements mixed with moments of confusion and contradiction, ultimately reflecting the unpredictable nature of celebrity politics.

Dennis Rodman’s unusual friendship with Trump adds yet another layer to this complex narrative of celebrity support. Known for his unconventional diplomacy, his endorsement of Trump in 2015 was perhaps less surprising given their past interactions on reality television. Rodman's unique relationships further illustrate the intersection of celebrity, politics, and personal connections, leaving admirers of both men puzzled by their unlikely alliance.

The growing list of Black celebrities publicly supporting Trump invites discussion about the implications of their endorsements. As these stars navigate their political identities, their actions resonate with fans and influencers, shaping perceptions of political allegiance within the entertainment industry. While some fans express disappointment and alienation, others celebrate this evolving landscape. The dynamics at play reflect a broader culture where celebrity influence and political expression are increasingly intertwined, pushing boundaries and challenging norms within both realms. As the midterm elections approach, it remains to be seen how these relationships will evolve and what impact they will ultimately have on the political discourse.
