This autumn, Gloucestershire will come alive with the return of two much-anticipated history festivals featuring a star-studded lineup of celebrities and historians. The first, the Cirencester History Festival, will take place from October 24 to November 2. Set across 17 venues in Cirencester, this festival promises an array of engaging activities, including insightful talks, crafting sessions, historical cookery demonstrations, film screenings, exhibitions, and interactive workshops. Among the notable headliners is **Charlie Cooper**, best known for his role in the BBC Three series **This Country**. His deep passion for history and metal detecting has made him the festival's ambassador. He emphasizes the importance of connecting with our past, reminding us that touching a centuries-old artifact is akin to grasping a part of our shared heritage.

Joining Cooper are an impressive roster of personalities. Retail strategist **Mary Portas**, humorist **Ben Miller**, and international affairs expert **Tim Marshall** will each share their unique insights and expertise. Broadcaster **John Suchet**, historian and investigator **Philippa Langley**, alongside Simon Jenkins, a renowned historian and columnist, will also be featured, each contributing to an enriching dialogue about history and its relevance today. The festival places a special focus on themes of geopolitics and international history, intending to spark interest and understanding among attendees.

Meanwhile, the **Gloucester History Festival**, which runs from September 6 to September 21, complements its Cirencester counterpart with an equally star-studded attraction. Comedian **Frank Skinner** will take the stage, alongside actress **Celia Imrie** and historian **David Olusoga**, known for his engaging narratives on historical topics. This year's program dives into a variety of intriguing subjects, from the **Bayeux Tapestry** to the **Magna Carta** and the **English Civil War**. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore the legacies of iconic figures such as **Margaret Thatcher**, **Harold Wilson**, and even delve into the world of famed magicians.

Adding to the blend of expert knowledge and engaging personalities is the annual **Winstone Talk**, organized by the Gloucester History Festival. This event will be held on October 25 at St John Baptist Church in Cirencester, featuring discussions on thought-provoking topics that resonate today. Among the highlighted speakers is **Greg Jenner**, a beloved figure in historical education, particularly known for his work with "Horrible Histories." Other notable guests include Professor **Alice Roberts** from the show **Digging For Britain**, journalist **Lyse Doucet**, and **Olivette Otele**, an expert on slavery research. These speakers will cover a diverse array of issues, ranging from social justice and modern history to the implications of events that shaped the contemporary world.

The festivals not only aim to educate but also to stir conversation about history's larger narratives. Cooper himself expressed the need for contemporary society to reconnect with history as a means of grounding ourselves in a rapidly changing world. He noted a rising trend of people seeking solace in historical knowledge and the joy of uncovering what they don’t yet understand. His sentiment resonates with many who find comfort in exploring the past, and it sets a reflective tone for the events expected to unfold at both festivals.

With the combination of engaging panels, historical insights, and the charm of the Cotswold setting, these festivals are an exceptional opportunity for history enthusiasts and curious minds alike. They provide a platform for collaboration between prominent figures in entertainment and scholarship, ensuring an enriching experience for attendees. Whether you are fascinated by ancient artifacts or modern geopolitical developments, Gloucestershire's history festivals offer a unique way to engage with the spectrum of stories that shape our understanding of the world.

As both festivals gather momentum, it’s clear that history is not just a story of the past but a living, breathing narrative that continues to evolve. The excitement surrounding these events also highlights a communal desire to reinvent history, making it relevant for today’s audience. Expect thought-provoking dialogue, inspiration, and perhaps the thrill of new discoveries as celebrities and historians unite in Gloucestershire this season!
