Empowering Dreams: A’ja Wilson Inspires Young Aspirants at Disney Dreamers Academy with Magic, Mentorship, and Motivation

In a world where representation matters deeply, the mantra "you can’t be what you can’t see," coined by renowned children’s rights activist Marian Wright Edelman, resonates strongly within the realm of celebrities and their vast influence. This year, the Disney Dreamers Academy (DDA) celebrated its 19th year by bringing together 100 aspiring young dreamers at the iconic Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida. This four-day program connected students with a host of inspirational figures, including esteemed celebrities and business leaders, who generously shared their wisdom and life experiences to empower the next generation.

Among the luminaries who graced this year’s event was A’ja Wilson, a seven-time WNBA All-Star and a beacon of success. Hailing from Columbia, South Carolina, Wilson plays as a forward-center for the Las Vegas Aces and is often heralded as the premier player in the league. Her accolades speak for themselves: a distinguished University of South Carolina graduate, she has been named TIME’s 2025 Athlete of the Year and has secured an impressive collection of four WNBA MVP awards, three league titles, and two Olympic gold medals. In the annals of basketball history, she stands out as the first player to achieve the remarkable feat of winning a championship while simultaneously claiming the scoring title, Finals MVP, league MVP, and Defensive Player of the Year within a single season.

The energy surrounding Wilson’s presence at the Disney Dreamers Academy was electric, with the 100 selected participants buzzing with excitement. These young dreamers, plucked from thousands of applications, cherished the rare opportunity to learn from a sports icon. A select few even enjoyed a memorable day out, riding Tiana’s Bayou Adventure roller coaster with Wilson—an adventure that was met with joyous screams and laughter. After the ride, the loveable Princess Tiana herself joined Wilson and the students for a fun chat and photo session, adding to the event's magical atmosphere.

Reflecting on the experience, Wilson stated, “This has been a great experience for me. To be able to connect with Dreamers and meet my dream princess [Tiana] has been a truly surreal moment. I’m so thankful that Disney has brought us all together from different paths of life to celebrate the one thing that truly matters—the magic inside and dreaming big.” Her motivating message to the young attendees was clear: “Don’t let anyone steal your dream. You have to live the life you want to live and be true to who you are, because that’s what really matters the most.” Her determination to overcome obstacles and remain disciplined resonated deeply, reminding the teens that success often occurs alongside challenges.

When quizzed about which Disney characters she would pick to join her in a 3-on-3 basketball game, her answer came with a spark of enthusiasm: “Duh! Princess Tiana, of course!” She playfully added that she would recruit Mulan and any other Disney princesses available, embodying a spirit of joy and camaraderie that was infectious. Shakaya Watson, a participant from Snellville, Georgia, shared her heartfelt impression of meeting Wilson: “It was a beautiful experience. I loved it. I’m so excited that I got to meet one of my mentors, especially as an athlete. Being a Disney Dreamer motivates me even more to achieve amazing things in my future.”

In addition to her impressive track record on the basketball court, Wilson also opened up about her life beyond sports, taking time out of her busy schedule to connect with the attendees on a more personal level. Sporting her long, ombre brown-to-honey-blonde braids, she shared details about her membership in the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Her recent feature in Vogue magazine also highlights her multifaceted life, which is set to expand even further as she prepares for her first MET Gala. “I can’t say what I’m wearing yet. It will definitely be special. It’s my first one, so I’m really trying to enjoy it,” she teased, leaving fans curious and excited about her next steps.

Throughout the Disney Dreamers Academy, motivation and encouragement were the driving forces. Wilson, who authored the upcoming best-seller "Dear Black Girls," candidly discussed her journey with dyslexia, providing a relatable narrative for many teenagers present, especially those facing similar challenges. Her openness about such personal hurdles empowered the teens to face their issues head-on rather than shy away from them. “Dreams are limitless!” she declared, emphasizing the boundless potential within each of them.

The Disney Dreamers Academy, enriched by the presence of influential figures like A’ja Wilson, not only celebrated the achievements of these celebrities but also served as a reminder of the importance of mentorship and representation. The interactions between the students and their celebrity role models fostered a sense of hope and possibility, demonstrating that dreams can come true with hard work, determination, and a little bit of magic. As these young dreamers returned to their communities, they carried with them not just memories of incredible encounters but also a renewed commitment to chase their aspirations, inspired by the stories of those who have blazed trails before them. In a world where visibility can profoundly impact self-belief, events like the Disney Dreamers Academy continue to be crucial in helping the next generation see their potential and reach for the stars.
