Exploring Hollywood's Hidden Literary Wonderland: Where A-List Stars and Timeless Tales Converge

### The Unseen Literary Heart of Hollywood: A Look Inside Mystery Pier Books

Nestled away in a quiet alley off the bustling Sunset Strip, Mystery Pier Books stands as a hidden gem in the heart of Hollywood. This unique bookstore, founded in 1998 by the father-son duo Harvey and Louis Jason, has become a sanctuary for Hollywood’s A-list bibliophiles. Specializing in rare first editions, many signed by their authors, the shop offers more than just books; it's a treasure trove of literary history that invites both celebrity and civilian book lovers to explore the written word.

Stepping into Mystery Pier is like entering a portal to another time—one rich with stories and a celebration of authorship. Unlike the more commercial Book Soup, located nearby and devoted to contemporary publications, Mystery Pier Books captures a sense of nostalgia with its collection that includes works dating back to the likes of Shakespeare. This isn't just a bookstore; it’s a museum where visitors can admire, beguile, and, if they’re willing to shell out the cash, purchase rare items that add to their personal libraries or collections. The shop serves as a reminder that even in the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, packed with studios and star-studded events, literature still holds a cherished place.

The store houses a rotating inventory brimming with incredible finds. During a recent visit, I was struck by the rare offerings available, from several plays by William Shakespeare, individually bound and priced between $4,500 and $12,000, to a signed English edition of *The Communist Manifesto* by Joseph Stalin, which can be yours for $35,000. Among the notable pieces is a coveted first edition of *The Diary of Anne Frank* in its original Dutch, with only 3,000 copies ever printed. With an inventory that tends to move quickly, one can only imagine the thrill of discovering such treasures.

Harvey Jason, now 85, is not just a bookseller; he’s a piece of cinematic history himself. He arrived in Los Angeles in 1968 to star alongside Julie Andrews in the musical film *Star!* and continued acting until his last role in *The Lost World: Jurassic Park* in 1997. With a twinkle in his eye as he recalls driving around the Universal lot in Steven Spielberg’s car, Harvey described a pivotal moment when he decided to shift focus from acting to curating books with his son. “We’ll see,” Harvey assured Spielberg when the famed director expressed doubt over his plans. The laughter they share over these memories adds a distinct charm to their business—a blend of showbiz and the passion for literature.

Celebrities have flocked to Mystery Pier since its inception. The store's walls are adorned with photographs of famous visitors who have left their mark on the shop. Flea, the legendary bassist from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, was among the first to discover the store and has since become a regular. Diane Keaton was a devoted patron before her recent passing, and her signed screenplay of *Annie Hall*—priced at $8,500—stands as one of the priciest items on sale. Johnny Depp, who portrayed a rare bookseller in *The Ninth Gate*, is a notable supporter of the shop. His penchant for its merchandise, including T-shirts and tote bags, has further cemented the bookstore’s cool factor in Hollywood circles.

As engaging stories of clientele unfold, the tales take on an even juicier turn, highlighting the colorful personalities that have stepped inside. Harvey and Louis share their fond memories of celebrity interactions, emphasizing that while most stars have been delightful, a few, like Roseanne Barr, left a more lackluster impression. Barr’s amusing misunderstanding of the nature of the shop—asking about “Louie Laymore” instead of the acclaimed Louis L’Amour—offered a laugh and showcased that not all visitors are well-versed in literary lore.

Interest in the literary classics remains high, especially given the current trends in Hollywood where timeless stories are continually reimagined for new audiences. Mystery Pier Books specializes in works by Charles Dickens, proudly featuring first editions of iconic novels like *Great Expectations*, *The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby*, and *Oliver Twist*. These are not simply books—they are exquisite box sets of the original illustrated monthly installments, designed to captivate a readership that often resembled a soap opera audience in its time.

As discussions of upcoming film adaptations circulate, the Jasons remain connected with the film industry. They anticipate calls from studios seeking matching literary treasures for upcoming projects. With Johnny Depp recently announced to star as Ebenezer Scrooge in a new adaptation of *A Christmas Carol*, the shop has started the search for a first edition of this classic tale. It’s a reflection of the symbiotic relationship between the worlds of literature and film, where Mystery Pier Books finds its niche.

In a time when the allure of visual entertainment often overshadows the written word, Mystery Pier Books stands as proof that Hollywood still has a deep appreciation for literature. Among the high-profile attendees, the passing of knowledge and love for reading is alive, continuing to weave a rich tapestry of stories that connect generations—both in the pages of books and on the silver screen. From rare finds to cherished relationships, the bookstore remains an essential part of the cultural landscape, reminding us that in Hollywood, the written word is as glamorous and timeless as the stars themselves.
